What to Do After Hurricane Roof Damage

Most homeowners policies include a "Duties After Loss" condition requiring you to protect your property from further damage. If you don't take reasonable steps to protect your property, your insurer may deny or reduce coverage, especially for additional damage that could have been prevented. Proper documentation helps support your claim.

  1. Safety first

Stay away from downed power lines, don't enter unsafe structures, and stay off the roof.

  2. Photograph and video everything before any work

Document the exterior, the roof from the ground, and interior ceilings and leaks, with date stamps, before any work begins.

  3. Report the claim to your insurer promptly

Note your claim number. In Florida, notice of a new or reopened claim is due within 1 year of the date of loss and a supplemental claim within 18 months (s. 627.70132, Fla. Stat.); for hurricanes the date of loss is the landfall date.

  4. Mitigate further damage

Get a professional emergency tarp or synthetic dry-in and stop interior water by moving belongings, extracting water, and running fans or dehumidifiers. Most policies require reasonable steps to protect the property.

  5. Keep every receipt and invoice

Save receipts for emergency repairs, materials, labor and additional living expenses; these may be reimbursable under your policy.

  1. Don't make permanent repairs or discard damaged materials yet

Wait for the adjuster to inspect unless something is needed for safety. Photograph anything you must remove and keep samples.

  2. Get a professional roof inspection and written report

Get measurements, photos and a written scope from a licensed contractor.

  3. Meet the adjuster

Have your documentation ready and ask for the adjuster's report and estimate in writing.

  4. Review the settlement and know your options

If you disagree, ask the insurer for an explanation. Options can include DFS mediation, appraisal under your policy, or a licensed public adjuster or attorney. DFS Consumer Helpline: 1-877-693-5236.

  5. Keep a log of all communications

Record dates, times, names and what was said for every call and visit, and keep copies of anything you sign.

Post-Storm Safety Tips

Your safety comes first. Before anyone works on your roof:

Stay off the roof

Damaged roofs can be weak, wet and slippery. Leave climbing to trained, insured crews.

Watch for power lines

Assume downed lines are live. Keep away and report them to your utility.

Document from the ground

Take photos and video of damage, including interior leaks, before cleanup begins.

Limit interior water

Move valuables, place buckets, and shut off power to wet areas if it is safe to do so.

Run generators outside

Never operate a generator indoors or in a garage. Carbon monoxide is deadly.

Hire licensed contractors

Verify any contractor's Florida license at MyFloridaLicense.com before work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about emergency roof tarping after Hurricane Isaias.

How quickly can you tarp my roof after Hurricane Isaias?

We dispatch crews as quickly as conditions safely allow. Timing depends on call volume, road access and weather, so call 305.608.8853 for current availability in your area. We can field up to a 50-person crew at any given time across the Florida Panhandle.

What is the difference between a blue tarp and a synthetic felt dry-in?

A blue tarp is a fast, temporary cover fastened over damaged areas with wood battens. A synthetic felt (synthetic underlayment) dry-in is installed directly over the roof deck after loose or damaged material is removed. It lies flatter, sheds water well and is often the better temporary option when more of the roof is affected. We recommend the right option after inspecting your roof.

Do you tarp commercial roofs?

Yes. We tarp and dry-in both residential and commercial roofs, including flat and low-slope commercial roofs, multifamily buildings, condominiums, retail and warehouse properties.

Will you help with my insurance claim?

We document the damage thoroughly with photos, video, roof measurements and a written report and estimate, and we provide that documentation to you to support your insurance claim. We are not public adjusters and do not represent you in your insurance claim or interpret your policy. Policy, coverage and settlement questions should go to your insurer or a licensed public adjuster.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Rapid Roof Tarps works in affiliation with Horizon Commercial Roofing Inc., Florida Certified Roofing Contractor CCC1329116 and Certified General Contractor CGC1535585. Crews are insured, and certificates of insurance are available on request.

Is a tarp a permanent repair?

No. A tarp or synthetic dry-in is a temporary measure to protect your property from further water damage. Permanent roof repair or replacement is available through Horizon Commercial Roofing Inc. once you are ready.

Which areas do you serve?

We serve the Florida Panhandle, including Pensacola, Pensacola Beach, Gulf Breeze, Navarre, Milton, Fort Walton Beach, Destin, Panama City, Panama City Beach, Mexico Beach and Tallahassee, across Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Gulf and Leon counties.

Should I climb onto my roof to cover the damage myself?

We strongly advise against it. Storm-damaged roofs can be weakened, wet and slippery, and downed power lines may be nearby. Take photos from the ground and call a licensed contractor.
